Two dignified dumpsters dumpsters

What Size Dumpster Do You Need?

Dumpster language can be hard to translate. One of the most daunting parts about hiring a dumpster rental service is knowing if you are choosing the correct size dumpster for your specific project. Dumpsters come in many various sizes. How can you accurately know how many yards you need if you have never seen or loaded a dumpster before?

Absolutely no one wants to spend more money than they need to. Here are some scenarios to help you choose the right size dumpster for your project before you place your order.

Dumpster Rental Sizes

10-Yard Dumpsters

Measurements: 12 feet long x 8 feet wide x 42″ tall

There are unlimited types of projects for a 10-yard dumpster. However, here are some specific examples to help you decide if a 10-yard dumpster is the size you need for your project.

Examples of projects for a 10-yard dumpster:

Livingroom

If you are cleaning out a living room, a 10-yard dumpster could hold a full-size couch, a lazy boy, end tables, and other smaller items packed in between these pieces.

Multiple Rooms

Ten-yard dumpsters are also optimal if you do not have a lot of huge items but are cleaning out a little bit from all over your house. For instance, a couple of dressers, an outdated accent chair, a desk, a mattress, and other moderate and small items loaded in between.

Appliances

Time for a new washer and dryer or even a small laundry room renovation? These are both excellent projects for a 10-yard dumpster. A 10-yard can easily handle a washer, dryer, shelving, and a couple cabinets.

Heavy Debris

Ten-yard dumpsters are also ideal for heavy debris like roofing shingles, bricks, and concrete. These items are dense and can cause a dumpster to reach weight capacity quickly. For heavy items, it’s best to order a smaller dumpster.

Weight overages should not be taken lightly (pun intended). Loading a dumpster and truck past capacity can put the truck driver and other motorists at risk. Due to this, many companies will charge extra fees and refuse service until the weight is corrected by the renter. If you have more weight than one dumpster can carry, it is best to split it between two or more dumpster loads.

Deck/Patio Removal

A small deck removal is also a fitting job for a 10-yard dumpster. Wood planks, support beams, chunks of concrete, and pavers can all fit.

Two dignified dumpsters. A 15 yard and a 10 yard

15-Yard Dumpsters

Measurements: 14 feet long x 8 feet wide x 52″ tall

These dumpsters are fantastic when you have a project that will be larger than the ones mentioned above for a 10-yard dumpster.

Examples of projects for a 15-yard dumpster:

A large cleanout for multiple rooms

A 15-yard dumpster is ideal when cleaning out before a move, cleaning out a large room like a basement, or getting rid of stuff after an estate or garage sale. A California King size mattress, large dresser, loveseat, side tables, and kitchen chairs can all fit.

Garage Cleanout

My favorite job for a 15-yard dumpster is a garage cleanout. It is perfect for old car parts, scraps from a completed project, broken sports equipment or toys, broken lawn care tools, and garage refrigerators or freezers. Just make sure there are no liquids or hazardous wastes, and you are good to go.

Bathroom Remodel

A 15-yard dumpster can easily handle a total bathroom remodel. Load it with the bathtub, toilet, vanities, tiles, drywall, and flooring. Have plumbing or wood scraps, those can fit too.

Kitchen Remodel

Are you getting rid of everything and the kitchen sink? A 15-yard dumpster can take on a complete kitchen remodel. There is enough room to fit an oven, dishwasher, sink, cabinets, and flooring.

Landscaping Project

Stumps, dead trees, branches, leaves, rocks, old pond equipment, and lawn ornaments can all go in a 15- yard dumpster.

20-Yard dumpsters and above

Dumpsters that are 20 yards or larger are typically used for commercial projects by commercial businesses. These are often used for new home builds over a longer period. The average homeowner will not need a 20-yard or larger dumpster.
